Their academic performance doesn’t correlate with other behavioural challenges they may be experiencing.Training as EducationTraining teaches a dog specific skills, much like learning academic subjects. Cues like “sit,” “stay,” and “down” can be thought of as lessons that are repeatedly practiced until mastered. This is incredibly beneficial, helping dogs feel guided and clear about what’s expected of them. Training creates a structure, but it’s not the whole picture.Behaviour as Emotional &amp; Physical Well-beingBehaviour is much more complex, involving not only training but emotions, physical and mental health, diet, life experiences and even vibrational energy. If a dog has been well-trained yet is reactive around other dogs or anxious in new environments, the cause lies in factors beyond basic training.There’s a grey area, too, where training can influence behaviour but to address behaviour fully, we need to look at many factors such as diet, physical comfort, underlying health issues, emotional state, and the overall energy between you and your dog. In holistic dog training, we aim to understand not just what the dog is doing, but why and I personally include the lense of vibrational energy which not many trainers do, even holistic ones!Supporting Behaviour Beyond TrainingBehavioural issues signal a need for support beyond obedience style cues. Try to observe them holistically, including all the things mentioned before in this blog. At the very least ask yourself:<ul><li>Are there any signs of pain or discomfort?</li><li>Is their diet affecting their energy or mood?</li><li>Could there be underlying health conditions?</li><li>Have they had any traumatic or stressful experiences?</li></ul>and more.Holistic dog training means connecting with our dogs on a deeper level, recognising that behaviour and training are interconnected but distinct parts of their well-being.Final ThoughtsBoth training and behaviour are vital, and the balance between them is key. While training builds skills, addressing behaviour supports emotional and physical health. By observing and understanding our dogs beyond obedience, we create a life where they can feel seen, heard, supported and loved unconditionally.
