Maybe your gundog is reactive on the lead. Maybe they can do something perfectly in the garden and fall apart the moment you're somewhere new. Sit. Stay. Recall. Leave it. And those things matter. I'm not here to dismiss them.</p><p style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;">But here's what gets missed: behaviour is the output. It's what we see at the surface. Underneath it is a nervous system, and that nervous system has to be in a state where learning is actually possible before any of that training can land the way you need it to.</p><p style="caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-variant-caps: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; text-decoration-thickness: auto; text-decoration-style: solid;">When a gundog is overwhelmed, over-aroused, or dysregulated, the part of the brain responsible for learning, choice, and connection is not fully available. You can repeat a cue fifty times in that state and get very little back. That isn't a training problem. That isn't your gundog being stubborn or stupid or difficult. Are they in a state where they can take information in, or are they running on adrenaline and instinct? Both ends of the lead matter. A handler who is tense, rushing, anxious, or disconnected brings all of that into the interaction. Gundogs are exquisitely sensitive to the state of the people around them. Connection deepens naturally.
